1st Senior Lunch & Learn A Big Success!

Senior Lunch and Learn 11-17-17

The Village of Schiller Park and Mayor Nick Caiafa hosted their first “Lunch and Learn” event at the Community Center on November 17, 2017. The event, catered and served by Gambino’s Fresh Market, consisted of roughly 160 Schiller Park senior citizens, who were in attendance to be educated on scams. The Village of Schiller Park began seeing an influx of scams targeting seniors and organized an event to help educate and protect our residents.

Schiller Park Police Department’s Officer Demos spoke on the most popular scams that target seniors. Some of the topics consisted of the following scams:

  • Telemarketing scams via internet, phones and mail;
  • Fake charities;
  • Fake sweepstakes;
  • Health-care fraud;
  • Identity Theft; and
  • Financial exploitation, including online investment and securities fraud.

Officer Demos provided all attending a “Senior Fraud Protection Kit.” The kit provided the seniors with a more detailed description of scams with check lists to raise self-awareness. Officer Demos also provided advice on how to detect if they are a victim of a scam.

The Village of Schiller Park plans on organizing more events for our seniors. If you want a copy of the handout "Senior Fraud Protection Kit" or if you believe you have been a victim of a scam, you can contact the Schiller Park Police Department’s non-emergency number: 847-678-4794 or email Officer Demos at: kdemos@schillerparkil.us.
