Old River Road and Irving Park Traffic Signal Project Updates

Please see the story map updates here: Traffic Signal Story Map

Remaining work - Over the winter there will be intermittent daily lane closures to allow for the electricians to install the remaining underground conduit for the traffic signal and streetlighting. The streetlighting and traffic signal will be installed once the components are received from the manufacture. The roadway surface will remain in it's current state until IDOT resurfaces the road under a separate contract.

12/8/2025 - All four lanes of traffic are now open! The current lane configuration will not be the final but will remain as such until the traffic signal lighting is installed.

10/28/2025 - The underground storm sewer work is nearly complete. The last phase is to connect the inlets from the north side of Irving Park to the south side of Irving Park. This will cause temporary shutdowns of traffic to one lane while the connections are storm sewer pipes are being installed. This should only occur between 9am and 3pm and will last about one hour at a time. This will take place on the 29th-30th of October.

The project was delayed due to a Nicor abandoned main located in the location of the storm sewer. The new anticipated completion date will be Spring of 2026. All lanes of traffic will be open by Thanksgiving.

6/11/2025 - A detour will begin for traffic heading southbound on Old River Road. Traffic will be diverted to southbound River Road, turn right onto Irving Park and then turn westbound onto Irving Park. This detour will only be up during work activities and only for two days. This detour will come be reinstalled when the construction moves to widening the roadway, in a few weeks.
